**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Jul 23 02:59:56 2008 Jul 23 15:12:46 howdy folks, dumb question here. I'm setting up a slug for the first time for fileserving (used it before as a robotics servo controller running gentoo, but anyway...). It's running slugos 4.8beta, and so far everything is looking good. Jul 23 15:13:04 I was looking into the scsi-idle setup so I can spin down my hard drives when not in use Jul 23 15:13:53 I get the impression from the nslu2 wiki that the newer versions of slugos already contain the scsi-idle patches in the kernel, but I can't seem to find anything about it specifically in the changlelogs or on the wiki Jul 23 15:14:30 are these kernel patches already in this latest slugos release? Jul 23 15:17:33 I *think* that I only need to add the scsi-idle package that seems to be in the feeds, and then configure the daemon correct? Jul 23 15:19:14 :o Jul 23 15:19:21 We can spin down USB disks? Jul 23 15:19:47 heh Jul 23 15:19:51 according to the wiki :) Jul 23 15:20:03 Ok Jul 23 15:20:12 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/FAQ/SpinDownUSBHarddisks Jul 23 15:21:32 Thank you :) Jul 23 15:38:25 hmm, not that I have my slug booted back up, doesn't seem that there is a scsi-idle package Jul 23 15:41:24 doh, it's in the optware feeds. Damn I miss portage heh Jul 23 16:30:54 * chrisb wasted some time trying to unbrick a wrt54G Jul 23 16:31:25 zedakster: let us know if you spin them down Jul 23 16:33:24 I have the scsi-idle package installed, but it didn't give me the config file (so no example), and manually calling the scsi-idle program with arguments results in an invalid argument error Jul 23 16:33:35 i.e. scsi-idle /dev/sda 32400 Jul 23 16:34:13 the package info for scsi-idle says a kernel patch is needed, but the wiki says slugos has the patch included already Jul 23 16:46:52 hmm, when I changed the time from 32400 seconds to 0, it went through Jul 23 16:47:07 still feels like they're spinning though Jul 23 16:47:39 hmm, got kernel probs in dmesg Jul 23 16:48:07 "program scsi-idle is using a deprecated SCSI ioctl, please convert it to SG_IO" Jul 23 16:48:26 hi - is this the right channel if i have built a non-working kernel or rootfs? Jul 23 16:52:47 I think I'm gonna give up on hd spin downs for now and go work on my rsync backups. I'll come back to it some other time, don't feel like the headache atm Jul 23 17:00:53 has anyone tried to do kernel-space calls to gpio in order to signal entrance to init process or kernel panics? Jul 23 17:01:56 i've tried to call gpio_set_value but the leds aren't set (maybe the kernel fails booting before) Jul 23 17:02:40 i don't really want to solder the serial port header onto the board; so i thought i may be able to do some debugging using the leds Jul 23 19:22:17 anyone tried logging kernel panics to mtd? seems this only gives 4x 00 for me Jul 23 20:05:57 anyone know where the openssh-sftp server package actually installs sftp-server? sshd_config is pointing at /usr/libexec/sftp-server, but it's not there, and I'll be damned if I can find it Jul 23 20:06:12 running a huge rsync right now, things too slow to run a big find Jul 23 20:06:52 which os? Jul 23 20:07:13 sorry. Slugos 4.8 beta Jul 23 20:08:22 may be /usr/lib/misc/sftp-server Jul 23 20:09:38 nope, not there Jul 23 20:09:49 eno, about? Jul 23 20:10:08 Reedy: hi, how are you! Jul 23 20:10:20 not s'bad, you? Jul 23 20:10:50 good, the other day i installed lenny/armel on my slug Jul 23 20:10:55 heh, cool :) Jul 23 20:10:58 working well? Jul 23 20:11:09 * Reedy remembers he needs to still get a "slug" for the optware cowsay Jul 23 20:11:15 very well, armel performs better than arm Jul 23 20:11:44 cool, might be worth a change later on for me Jul 23 20:12:09 You wouldnt happen to be able to answer zedakster question would you? Jul 23 20:12:13 i even tried running some lightweight window manager under tightvncserver Jul 23 20:12:41 it works, and kindof usable Jul 23 20:13:03 heh, ace Jul 23 20:13:53 zedakster: to see what ipkg contains, use "ipkg files " Jul 23 20:14:34 gracias Jul 23 20:15:17 been a gentoo dork for many years, I'm lost with portage Jul 23 20:15:28 *without portage Jul 23 20:20:47 arch's (never used it) "pacman" is aptly (haha, debian) named Jul 23 20:22:39 anyone know how slugos4.8 handles floating point? User lib, or is the kernel trapping 'em and doing a context switch? Jul 23 20:24:50 I used to run a softfloat uclibc setup in gentoo on this slug, but not sure how slugos goes about it Jul 23 20:24:59 zedakster: $ readelf -h /lib/libc.so.6 | grep Flags Jul 23 20:24:59 Flags: 0x206, has entry point, GNU EABI, interworking enabled, software FP Jul 23 20:25:19 on slugos 4.8 Jul 23 20:25:36 you're full of handy info :) Jul 23 20:26:05 * zedakster hands eno a taco Jul 23 20:26:52 if your using something optware based, you've got a lot to thank eno for ;) Jul 23 20:29:26 I am, and I am :) **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Jul 24 02:59:56 2008
