**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Aug 06 03:00:02 2008 Aug 06 13:02:53 Hi guys, first of all thanks for the great work you've been doing! transmission 1.30 has just been released and i'm just wondering when it will be available in the WD MyBook optware? Aug 06 14:11:30 oh slug gurus, I come before you again to beg for help :) Aug 06 14:12:31 had my slug running slugos be for about 2 weeks now solidly serving up samba. I've noticed this problem once before running emacs (stopped using it after this). The slug shut itself down, and I had to unplug it for about 10 minutes before I could get it start back up Aug 06 14:13:06 this morning I setup rtorrent on it, and had three torrents running. Looked over and it had shut itself off again. I unplugged it for half and hour, and I still can't get it to start again Aug 06 14:13:37 I'm guessing that this has something to do with high memory usage, even though I have 750mb of swap space setup on an external drive Aug 06 14:13:57 Any tips as to how I can get my slug to turn on again? Anyone else seen this behavior before? Aug 06 14:17:18 if it's becauase theres no free space left, you could connect the disk to a pc and remove some files Aug 06 14:17:38 there's tons of free space on the drives Aug 06 14:17:49 root, storage, and my backup partitions Aug 06 14:18:09 then i'm clueless :( Aug 06 14:18:57 I'm wondering if I've bricked it, or if it has a hardware problem Aug 06 14:22:39 hi Aug 06 14:27:01 wut who. Holding down reset and hitting power doesn't do anything either Aug 06 14:28:23 Hi guys, first of all thanks for the great work you've been doing! transmission 1.30 has just been released and i'm just wondering when it will be available in the WD MyBook optware? Aug 06 14:29:28 zek: like, not lights or just not being able to connect to it after it's in update mode + Aug 06 14:29:35 no lights Aug 06 14:29:49 that sounds scary Aug 06 14:30:11 I was suspicious of this thing when it crashed like this before when I ran emacs, and I had to unplug it for a while before getting it back on Aug 06 14:30:26 no messages in the logs either when I got it back up. I'm guessing it has bad memory Aug 06 14:30:34 better order another one before they're all outta stock Aug 06 14:31:00 do nslu2s go out of stock ? Aug 06 14:31:09 didn't they stop making them? Aug 06 14:31:13 linksys I mean Aug 06 14:31:33 no idea Aug 06 14:41:56 well, just ordered a new slug. Dammit. Aug 06 14:42:47 guess it'll be pretty easy to just reflash the new one with slugos, and point it to my existing install Aug 06 14:43:46 here's hoping the next one doesn't have the same problem :) Aug 06 14:59:20 hmm, I think my power supply might be bad Aug 06 15:03:57 nope. damn thing really is bricked Aug 06 15:23:08 zedakster: Is your slug stock or did you do the resistor mod? Aug 06 15:24:27 resistor mod ages ago Aug 06 15:24:46 used to use this as a servo controller, just started using it as a server two weeks ago. Aug 06 15:25:21 seemed solid, but I've had this shutdown problem it seems with programs that use a lot of memory. It definitely isn't starting anymore Aug 06 15:25:30 I'm guessing bad memory Aug 06 19:15:59 Where are folk finding slugs these days? eSlay? Or a real vendor? I tried to get some from Tiger a couple of months back, but they ran out :-( Aug 06 19:16:25 I found some on amazon today Aug 06 19:16:35 ah ha! Aug 06 19:20:24 the US seems in rather low supply of them Aug 06 19:20:29 uk and such seem to have more avaliable Aug 06 19:21:42 I thought the linksys site had them listed as discontinued? If so, I'd imagine they're just selling off their stocks, and then no more slug Aug 06 19:22:26 ya Aug 06 19:59:55 I got mine on ebay but wan't too much of a steal after shipping from the US to Canada **** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Aug 06 22:57:16 2008 Aug 07 01:40:54 hi Aug 07 01:42:15 hi Aug 07 01:42:35 I have a question about the nslu2 Aug 07 01:42:59 Can I use it as a print server? Aug 07 01:58:27 arthur92710: yes Aug 07 01:58:33 using cups Aug 07 01:59:32 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/AddPrinter <--if you are using unslung Aug 07 01:59:54 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/OpenSlug/InstallCups <--if you are using SlugOS Aug 07 02:03:54 cool thank, this it for a usb printer right? Aug 07 02:04:23 what about a parallel port printer? Aug 07 02:04:44 Can I use a usb-paralel adapter? Aug 07 02:10:22 yes Aug 07 02:10:43 the printer I use is parallel with an adapter :) Aug 07 02:11:53 cool thats great! Aug 07 02:19:46 I just ordered a box for $25, cant wait to get it. Aug 07 02:20:15 What do you recomend the unslung or slungOS Aug 07 02:20:23 depends Aug 07 02:20:35 are you experianced with linux, using the shell (ssh) that is Aug 07 02:22:48 unslung is good if you are not familiar with linux ... its a great learning tool also. It also retains all the functionality of the linksys firmware Aug 07 02:23:24 I have never used linux Aug 07 02:23:36 however, it is also bogged down and doesn't support as much as slugos does Aug 07 02:24:10 slugos is good if you are familiar with linux ... it, however, is not a good learning tool... You are provided with no web gui or anything to help get your started Aug 07 02:24:23 basically it only has a ssh server installed at first for you to use Aug 07 02:24:31 it does not retain the functionality of the linksys firmware Aug 07 02:25:00 although, it runs stuff faster, is not as bogged down, and has support for much more hardware because it has a newer kernel Aug 07 02:26:14 SlugOS is my choice, and it can be configured to do everything and more that unslung can Aug 07 02:26:27 however, its not really an ideal thing for someone new to linux commands Aug 07 02:27:17 so, if you are new to linux commands, I suggest unslung for you ... and maybe after a while once you start to learn many of the linux commands you can switch to SlugOS Aug 07 02:29:04 of course, if you want Aug 07 02:29:15 you can attempt to use SlugOS and if you find it too hard for you Aug 07 02:29:23 you can easily switch to unslung Aug 07 02:30:11 most of the stuff you will want to install has a walkthrough on the wiki Aug 07 02:30:21 and, of course, there is almost always someone around here to help you Aug 07 02:32:13 where did you get your slug for $25 at? Aug 07 02:32:17 that's pretty cheap Aug 07 02:43:13 well 25 and 14 shipping Aug 07 02:43:24 on ebay Aug 07 02:43:51 still pretty good Aug 07 02:44:22 I wont pay untill the weekend, there should be a new promo code for like 10% off Aug 07 02:44:27 I use to buy nslu2s on ebay for like $40-$55 (total+shipping) on ebay Aug 07 02:44:36 then do the cpu hack Aug 07 02:44:40 install unslung on them Aug 07 02:44:48 and resell them for $80 (total+shipping) Aug 07 02:45:17 made a lot of money the year I did that Aug 07 02:45:23 sold around $3K worth Aug 07 02:45:36 hmm Aug 07 02:45:44 let me see if I have any ebay promos Aug 07 02:45:45 LOL I found a cupon on ebay for $25 bucks, it works, but when you loginto paypal it says "connected to another account." :( Aug 07 02:45:51 Thats nice! Aug 07 02:46:40 nope, don't have any Aug 07 02:46:42 all expired Aug 07 02:47:01 I hope you did not charge for the software. You did get it for free, so you can really only charge for labor and time. Aug 07 02:47:15 no Aug 07 02:47:21 I charged for the installation Aug 07 02:47:22 why? Aug 07 02:47:28 right Aug 07 02:47:37 labor and time Aug 07 02:47:44 a few times I gave hard drives with them Aug 07 02:47:53 and actually installed stuff like php and apache and mysql on them Aug 07 02:47:57 and configured them ready to go Aug 07 02:48:01 I made a lot when I did that Aug 07 02:48:13 hard drive + nslu2 would be about $100 Aug 07 02:48:17 I would sell for around $200 Aug 07 02:48:21 free stuff always makes something seem better Aug 07 02:48:36 even if it does not cost much! Aug 07 02:48:51 oh, the hard drives were not free Aug 07 02:49:22 the $200 cost was $50 for the hard drive $50 for the nslu2, $100 for the install Aug 07 02:49:29 lol I ment that people like it when you say stuff like "with a free ..." Aug 07 02:49:29 people actually bought them Aug 07 02:49:58 Nice job Aug 07 02:51:03 it was a little harder selling the hard drive combo thing though Aug 07 02:51:13 which is why I only did 2-3 of those Aug 07 02:51:18 but just the nslu2 itself Aug 07 02:51:21 those sold every time Aug 07 02:51:27 Ughh.. it late(10:50) and I got to go to sleep, got work(tutoring in summer school) tomorrow. See you later! Aug 07 02:51:34 would bring in a profit of around $20-$30 per unit Aug 07 02:51:46 after the unit cost and the paypal/ebay fees Aug 07 02:52:04 thats still good. Aug 07 02:52:09 bye all!! **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Aug 07 02:59:57 2008
