**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Dec 17 02:59:57 2008 Dec 17 05:13:30 I'm trying to put my slug into upgrade mode, but the light goes from yellow to an alternating red/green. I can't get it to settle on just a red light. Neither the alternating red/green nor the yellow light seems ot be right, as the windows update program (Serrcomm) can't find the slug either way. Am I doing something wrong? Dec 17 05:15:26 alternating is fine. If serrcomm can't find it, then you may need to search the wiki or the mailing list archives for suggestions, esp if you are running vista. Dec 17 05:16:33 I'm running XP. I wonder if it's because I'm running XP in parallels on my Mac. Shouldn't be the case, though. Dec 17 05:18:51 I have no idea what "parallels on my Mac" means, but if it means that your XP is not running on a standard Intel x86 hardware with standard networking cards, you may have problems. Dec 17 05:22:59 Parallels is like VMware but allows for windows programs to integrate better into the OSX environment. I guess that does kinda sound like I'm running some kind of crazy somethingorother on an NIC. "in parallel on my MAC [address] heh. But yeah, XP is running in a virtual machine. I'm trying it now on my XP desktop machine and it also doesn't detect the slug. I'm going to try rebooting the slug. Dec 17 05:23:48 Ah, I get it now - thanks! Dec 17 05:24:03 mwester: i still can't get my udev rule working... Dec 17 05:25:11 Hum. blinking red/green light running on standard XP standalone, not virtualized, with regular NIC card and everything, still doesn't see the slug... Dec 17 05:27:13 Is there another way to flash the slug? I've tried via web interface and got an error. Now I've tried the Serrcomm thing. I can't build the UpSlug2 for my Mac. The pre-built Mac binaries are only for non-Intel Macs. Mine is Intel, not PPC. I don't have Linux. Can I TFTP or SSH or anything? I've got OpenWRT on the thing now, so SSHing is possible, I just want to know if SSH-upgrading is possible. Dec 17 05:28:56 Great. "Friends don't let friends flash custom firmware without confirmed RedBoot Upgrade Mode access." If I can't get to upgrade mode, I'm stuck? Dec 17 05:30:41 What method did you use to enter upgrade mode? Dec 17 05:31:42 mwester: Turn off slug, press in reset button, turn on, wait 10 seconds (mine is actually closer to 20 before yellow turns to red), release when LED turns red. When I release, it starts altnernating red/green. Dec 17 05:31:59 Then you are in upgrade mode, all is well. Dec 17 05:32:44 Your slug is plugged into a switch via a known-good cable, right? And your PC running native Windows XP is also connnected to that same switch, with a known-good networking cable, right? Dec 17 05:33:26 mwester, but the upgrade utility can't find it. Yes. I can SSH into the slug when it's not in upgrade mode. Dec 17 05:33:49 But the upgrade utility doesn't find it. I get the "browsed devices on network" box and the devices list is empty and remains empty Dec 17 05:34:04 It *is* a switch, rigth -- not a router or other filtering/routing device? Dec 17 05:34:37 Routers. I don't own switches. Dec 17 05:34:41 WRT54g Dec 17 05:35:01 router Dec 17 05:36:03 Right, but both devices are on the switch side of the router, you do not have on on the WAN side? This is important because the upgrade protocol is not TCP/IP. Dec 17 05:36:22 Correct. They're both on the switch side. My cable modem is plugged into the WAN side. Dec 17 05:37:41 OK. You are logged into windows with an account that has Administrator privs? Dec 17 05:37:46 Yes. Dec 17 05:38:55 Ok. Disable the firewall, as well as any other firewall/antivirus programs. Dec 17 05:46:57 mwester: Did you say anything after "OK. You are logged into windows with an account that has Administrator privs?" My internet connection dropped and I didn't notice. Dec 17 05:51:12 Ok. Disable the firewall, as well as any other firewall/antivirus programs. Dec 17 05:54:05 I've got no firewall and AV running. Dec 17 05:56:52 And when you start the utility, does it show you a dialog box with a list of "LAN Cards"? Dec 17 06:04:02 mwester yes, and I select the NIC. The other option is my firewire card. I selelct the NIC, then browse targets, and I get a dialog with no targets listed Dec 17 06:04:38 Ok. Dec 17 06:05:21 What's the version of the program (about dialog box)? Dec 17 06:06:09 mwester: 2.07 that which is available on the slug-linux pages. Dec 17 06:08:16 Ok, just to recap then -- your slug is powered up, in upgrade mode which you can viusally verify because the leds are flashing correctly, the cables have not been disturbed since you were able to ssh into the slug, you are logged in as the Administtrator on a stock, Microsoft Windows XP system running on bare iron (i.e. no emulator or vmware), Dec 17 06:08:52 you have absolutely no firewall software, or anti virus software running on the XP system, and the "Upgrade Utility" cannot find the slug? Dec 17 06:09:19 (btw, I'm upgrading my slug using that utility on my XP system right now... works fine) Dec 17 06:10:37 Couple things: first, I'm assuming "flashing red-green-red-green" is "flashing correctly." Second thing, the problem with "cables have not been disturbed" is that whenever I press the reset button, the cables necessarily get disturbed, so I can't say with 100% accuracy that this is true. But there is no reason why it logically should not be true. Dec 17 06:10:46 But everything else you said is true. Dec 17 06:11:08 Could it be because teh slug is running OpenWRT? Dec 17 06:15:00 It's not running OpenWRT -- it's running the upgrade code in its bootloader. Dec 17 06:15:50 Ok, well, then lets assume that you've managed to get into "assign" mode instead of upgrade. Dec 17 06:16:14 Oh. Well, I don't know. It's not working. Also, for some reason (it's probably an OpenWRT thing), pressing and holding down the power button doesn't turn the slug off. I have to unplug it every time I want to reboot. Maybe that's a symptom of something wrong? Dec 17 06:16:46 So, this time around, do the same reset procedure, but look for ANY change in the LEDs at about 11 - 12 seconds -- any further and you'e missed it. Dec 17 06:21:24 That did it, I guess. I'm now seeing it show up in the upgrade program. Thanks a lot, mwester! Dec 17 06:21:30 :) Dec 17 06:22:30 Once it's upgraded, I shall name the device "mwester." Dec 17 06:22:59 I was going with a "sets of numbers" naming scheme (imaginary, real, rational, natural, etc.)... Dec 17 06:23:03 hello Dec 17 06:23:13 spek 1 german? Dec 17 06:23:33 Nein. But babelfish works good for German-English I think. Dec 17 06:23:50 I translated an article from German to English fairly correctly using babelfish.altavista.com Dec 17 06:24:08 ok Dec 17 06:24:28 ircd-hybrid - 7.2.2-1 - IRCD Hybrid >- config datai ? IRC Server ??? Dec 17 06:27:30 hmm Dec 17 06:28:08 mwester: SlugOS 5.1-alpha doesn't have udevinfo Dec 17 06:28:16 mwester: after upgrading, do I just reboot the slug? Dec 17 06:30:33 NSLU2-IRC: sprechen sie japanisches, spanisches, italiener, portugiesisches? Dec 17 06:31:24 ich kann deutsches nicht sprechen, aber ich sprechen jap, span, italien, portugies Dec 17 06:32:22 english =) Dec 17 06:33:27 I will translate it Dec 17 06:34:09 I'm looking for an IRC server Dec 17 06:34:09 TheoMurpse: the upgrade procedure will finish up by rebooting. Dec 17 06:34:24 scant: ok. Is it supposed to? Dec 17 06:34:31 what provides that? Dec 17 06:35:09 ircd-hybrid I've installed Dec 17 06:35:12 mwester: OK. However, the ready light is not on, nor has it been for the past few minutes since the upgrade was done. Did it brick? Dec 17 06:35:25 I can't ping it, nor can I log in to its last known IP. Dec 17 06:35:31 What did you install? Dec 17 06:35:34 and I'd set it to be static. Dec 17 06:35:37 openwrt Dec 17 06:35:45 where you can now adjust the program? can not find file Dec 17 06:37:12 Dunno about openwrt, but it wouldn't surprise me if it does not necessarily light the LEDs as one might expect. It's certainly not a brick, there are only a very small number of bricks ever created, and those were by the use of the horrible Linksys "EraseAll" utility. Dec 17 06:37:44 So it's probably running something, but you'll have to check to see how to manage/recover/control that "something". Dec 17 06:39:17 mwester: i don't know if it's supposed to... Dec 17 06:39:37 then perhaps it's not really missing... Dec 17 06:39:54 mwester: So if I manually reboot, it shouldn't destroy anything? Dec 17 06:40:16 Oh, I should add the ethernet light is on, though Dec 17 06:40:21 I can't speak for every firmware out there, but if it does anything bad that firmware wouldn't be worth running. Dec 17 06:41:21 I suggest you serach the wikis for info on OpenWRT on the NSLU2, and see what it defaults to, if it uses/saves network settings between flashes, or if it returns to some default, etc. Dec 17 06:42:18 scant: did you try the ipkg search engine to see if there's any packages in the feeds with such a utility? Dec 17 06:44:13 is where to find the file you can adjust to the IRC server? Dec 17 06:44:15 I have seen that supposedly it saves the static IP to NVRAM, so when you upgrade, it just gets the old static IP from NVRAM and uses that. So it should still be 192.168.1.103, but I can't ssh in nor telnet in. I'll unplug it and plug it back in and see what happens. Can I always go back to upgrade mode and try again? Dec 17 06:44:41 yes Dec 17 06:54:52 mwester: Thanks for your help. Turns out when booting up the slug, it decided it wanted to have DHCP running and be the device handing out the IP to my DHCP-windows box. So to access it, I had to use my actual router's IP (which was now the slug's), log in, turn off DHCP, give my computer a static IP and tell it the gateway is .1.1, not the slug's IP, and now I'm good to go. Everything appears to be in order. Thank you very mu Dec 17 14:15:40 are there any utils in ipkg which do log rotations, log pruning, etc? Dec 17 14:15:52 for slugosbe? Dec 17 17:32:56 mwester: I got my udev rule to work now, but it only works after bootup when i physically remove and plug in the cable. it doesn't work upon bootup and i know it's running, i still haven't figured out why the rule isn't setting permissions at bootup, i'm thinking perhaps the device nodes aren't created then, but that doesn't make sense to me... Dec 17 20:03:25 hi Dec 17 20:04:26 I did an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, now my ssh service seems to be down. Dec 17 20:04:36 Is there some way to reactivate it? Dec 17 20:06:39 did you try rebooting? Dec 17 20:07:15 yes, i rebooted it Dec 17 20:07:25 :( Dec 17 20:08:01 That's what I thought, too. ;) Dec 17 20:27:15 mwester: do you know if I should be using /proc/bus/usb or /dev/bus/usb? Dec 17 21:32:45 scant: probably /dev/bus/usb; that seems to be the new direction for things when I did a bit of googling. I posted the line from the newer udev config files that creates the /dev/bus/usb entries; hopefully that should be enough (because newer udevs seem to blow up the flash space right now, so I can't upgrade without putting udev on a severe diet). Dec 17 21:33:28 hm Dec 17 21:33:56 i tried it, saw what it did, but thought i should be using /proc/bus/usb so kept on troubleshooting in that direction **** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Dec 18 02:59:56 2008
