**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Tue Jan 20 02:59:57 2009 Jan 20 21:00:34 Hi, I've installed lenny on my NSLU2 following the instructions here: http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/ and then tuned it using the instructions here: http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/linux-on-flash.html. The box worked fine after isntallation and the first reboots were no problem. After installing more software (screen, syslog instead of rsyslog for memory, etc), the network on the box didnt come up after a reboot. I've followed the instruction Jan 20 21:02:13 oh, and currently the disk & status lights are on 'green', which chould indicate a fully booted & running system. Jan 20 21:02:44 is the network light also green? Jan 20 21:02:59 no, the network light is not on Jan 20 21:03:12 the box does not repsond to ping, neither on it's given address nor the default, arp doesn't see it either Jan 20 21:03:47 if the network light is on, its either a broken LED, or theres no network connection Jan 20 21:04:06 it goes on when turning the machine on Jan 20 21:04:18 ie, when all leds are meant to be on Jan 20 21:04:30 should the light be on if htere's merely a cable plugged in? Jan 20 21:04:58 aye Jan 20 21:05:06 any status light on the other end - router/switch? Jan 20 21:05:25 it's an airport extreme -- the logs show no dhpc requests though Jan 20 21:05:48 i'd expected to find the most useful information in the bootlogs on the flash drive, but like i mentioned, nothing on there at all Jan 20 21:06:03 no file changed since the reboot was issued when it had network Jan 20 21:08:22 the led order is: cycling lights (ethernet is on), only ethernet on, then disk1 comes on (the flash drive), ethernet goes off Jan 20 21:08:36 about 20 seconds later the status light goes on Jan 20 21:08:44 and it remains in that state Jan 20 21:08:51 i cant remember if the ethernet lights still light during its POST and such if no cable is plugged in Jan 20 21:09:16 i've just double checked hte cables -- they're all plugged in appropriately. They should be, they didnt change during the reboot after all Jan 20 21:12:33 oh, and no beeps are coming from the machine Jan 20 21:12:45 is there anything that could be stopping it from booting? waiting on input or so? Jan 20 21:12:59 fsckfix=yes was already in the config Jan 20 21:13:06 nope, serialisation or putting hte drive on another machine usually brings some clues Jan 20 21:13:37 Any place i could look? Jan 20 21:13:52 i'm rather new to the NSLU2, so i may just be missing something very obvious Jan 20 21:14:33 /var/log - dmesg and syslog i suspect Jan 20 21:14:45 its pretty much a standard debian box Jan 20 21:15:06 there's no new syslog & debian Jan 20 21:15:22 (and i meant in relation to leds, beeps, boot stuff, ttys, etc) Jan 20 21:15:48 does the status light flash orange periodically? Jan 20 21:16:00 no, only when it starts booting Jan 20 21:16:05 it's a steady green on status & disk 1 Jan 20 21:16:13 ethernet & disk2 are off (there is no disk2, so that makes sense) Jan 20 21:16:33 mine in a booted state has ethernet light on and status green flashing orange Jan 20 21:16:51 - Disk on, status alternating amber and green: Shutdown/reboot in progress. Jan 20 21:16:56 From: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-nslu2-utils/trunk/debian/README.Debian?op=file Jan 20 21:17:17 perhaps orange ne amber :) Jan 20 21:17:42 it lies Jan 20 21:17:53 great, i was using that for diagnostics :) Jan 20 21:17:53 mine has always been green flashing orange in booted mode Jan 20 21:18:42 i'm reading /usr/bin/leds now Jan 20 21:18:54 it has the definition of the lights as a posixh shell script (the joys) Jan 20 21:19:24 singleuser and system have the same definition Jan 20 21:21:37 Reedy: is there a chance the slug is actually not booting off the drive (properly)? is there a way to tell? Jan 20 21:21:59 It wont boot without the drive.. Is there any activity? Jan 20 21:22:26 i have the flash hooked up to my laptop now -- should i try and start teh slug without the flash attached, see what the leds do? Jan 20 21:22:43 i can't quite tell 'boot' yet, except from the led activity i described above Jan 20 21:22:57 it wont do much without the drive attached Jan 20 21:23:59 without the drive, only the ethernet led is lit green Jan 20 21:24:46 Same cycle as with the drive though; rotating leds, etc. except hten only the ethernet stays on Jan 20 21:28:26 hmm Jan 20 21:28:53 reedy: someone complaining about no bootlogd/dmsg on his install (not the same as working system, but still) Jan 20 21:29:03 there it was hwclock being the problem: http://forum.soft32.com/linux/NSLU2-Debian-Etch-manual-install-orange-led-ftopict461283.html Jan 20 21:29:25 now, i've done 'sudo hwclock ...' as per the install instructions.. is there somewhere i can check on the flash drive if that actually did what it should? Jan 20 21:29:48 not a clue, sorry Jan 20 21:29:50 the reboot was *after* installing some new packages, includinge openssh-server, so things may have been pulled in Jan 20 21:30:10 surely ssh should've already been installed? Jan 20 21:32:23 Yes of coures.. by openssh i mean ntp(date) Jan 20 21:33:01 vim, less, rsync, perl Jan 20 21:33:06 removed rsyslog, installed syslog Jan 20 21:34:14 samba & smbfs, host, screen Jan 20 21:34:15 that' si Jan 20 21:34:17 *that's it Jan 20 21:36:23 reedy: feel free to tell me to go look elsewhere :) i've also added this script as per the suggestion in the install guide: http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/files/kernel-params Jan 20 21:36:33 any chance this is causing interference? Jan 20 21:37:23 cant see why it would Jan 20 21:37:38 starting to clutch at straws now Jan 20 21:37:47 if theres nothing on the drive (logs wise), i suspect short of serialising, reinstalling is the only option Jan 20 21:38:01 serialising as in, hook up serial console? Jan 20 21:38:12 yeah Jan 20 21:38:18 meaning putting a serial header on it Jan 20 21:38:29 sorry, i dont know what that means Jan 20 21:39:19 http://rwhitby.sourceforge.net/nslu2/J2-IDC-Connector.jpg Jan 20 21:40:29 that looks like it may have something to do with soldering... way out of my league Jan 20 21:40:43 ;) Jan 20 21:41:03 but no, i dont have any equipment to hook up... so, upslug2 and flash a new installer image is your suggestion? Jan 20 21:41:24 if you cant find anything in logs that give you a clue, you havent much more choice Jan 20 21:41:44 was looking for a place to make it more verbose... either via leds or via logs Jan 20 21:50:29 thanks for your time Reedy, i'll try a reinstall tomorrow Jan 21 02:25:02 * joat is away: Away **** ENDING LOGGING AT Wed Jan 21 02:59:57 2009
