**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Nov 19 02:59:57 2009 Nov 19 05:10:30 I'm pretty new to this and i was wondering how to get my newly unslung slug to work with my linksys router. I can't seem to update the package list or ping any websites while i'm telnet'ing successfully because my router is blocking my slug. I've tried opening up port 80 but it still doesn't get any pings or anything Nov 19 05:46:12 I'm pretty new to this and i was wondering how to get my newly unslung slug to work with my linksys router. I can't seem to update the package list or ping any websites while i'm telnet'ing successfully because my router is blocking my slug. I've tried opening up port 80 but it still doesn't get any pings or anything Nov 19 06:04:46 set your default gateway and dns servers in the Linksys web gui on the slug. Nov 19 06:05:53 Your router isn't blocking the slug; home routers only block inbound connections not outbound connections from the slug to the internet. Nov 19 06:38:13 set my default gateway and dns servers to what? Nov 19 20:03:00 hello Nov 19 20:03:05 I'm looking for some advice as to which Linux distro to install on a slug Nov 19 20:03:10 v.simple requirements, but constrained by no external storage Nov 19 22:53:45 i'm new to this and have successfully unslung my slug. Now i'm trying to set up opensshf with puTTy. I ran into a phrase in the instructions which says to to set the "Key comment" to root@hostname after i generate a key in puTTy. MY question is what is my hostname. Is it whatever user i make in the linksys GUI? so far i have admin and guest. Is my hostname admin? Nov 19 23:11:43 Is there a reason you need to do that? If you just install putty on your windows system, and openssh on the slug, it will "just work". Nov 19 23:12:04 you'll be prompted for a password when you connect, and you can login as usual. Nov 19 23:12:33 The only reason to go through the hassle with the keys is if you want to increase the security, or if you want to do password-less login. Nov 20 00:53:19 hello all Nov 20 00:53:34 I have a NSLU2 I messed up and am now trying to reprogram Nov 20 00:53:52 I was looking for some help Nov 20 00:53:59 upslug2 seems to work but nothing else Nov 20 00:54:06 or nothing past that step rather Nov 20 00:54:47 the instructions I'm following are Nov 20 00:54:47 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/NSLU2 Nov 20 00:55:36 what problem are you actually having? Nov 20 00:56:14 I have the image loaded Nov 20 00:56:24 and I'm trying to ssh in on the installer account Nov 20 00:56:42 the ip address never seems to come up Nov 20 00:56:49 so I can't SSH Nov 20 00:56:56 how long have you given it? Nov 20 00:57:04 And are you sure its going to be on that ip address? Nov 20 00:57:12 I just reprogrammed it but last time I gave it over 20 min Nov 20 00:57:35 the ip address I'm using is the one referenced on the instructions Nov 20 00:57:43 192.168.1.77 Nov 20 00:57:51 which is the default Nov 20 00:57:56 yes Nov 20 00:57:56 Is that where it was before? Nov 20 00:58:17 well I haven't done this in a couple years Nov 20 00:58:42 I can't remember EXACTLY what I did last time Nov 20 00:58:53 heh Nov 20 00:58:59 not at last install Nov 20 00:59:06 Before it broke Nov 20 00:59:16 oh....... Nov 20 00:59:29 before I think it was 192.168.1.1 Nov 20 00:59:34 it was the DHCP server Nov 20 00:59:38 I can try that Nov 20 00:59:38 Ahh Nov 20 00:59:46 Might be worth it Nov 20 00:59:53 Are you not running a dhcp server now? Nov 20 01:00:04 There were a few different rules for the debian installers... Depending on past config and i can never remember whats what Nov 20 01:00:52 would a newly programmed slug reply to a ping? Nov 20 01:01:10 pass Nov 20 01:01:21 i really cant remember Nov 20 01:01:35 well ssh doesn't respond and nmap shows nothing Nov 20 01:01:39 doh Nov 20 01:04:12 slick666, http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/install.html Nov 20 01:04:17 Since the NSLU2 does not have an LCD, the installer cannot tell you which IP address to connect to or which password to use. With regards to the IP address, the following strategy is used: Nov 20 01:04:17 If you have configured your network settings through the Linksys web interface to use a static IP address, these values will be used (including the hostname and domain). Nov 20 01:04:17 If you configured the NSLU2 to use DHCP, the Debian installer will use DHCP. You can use the MAC address of your NSLU2 to tell your DHCP server to give out a specific IP address to your machine. Nov 20 01:04:17 If you configured a static IP address but some values (e.g. DNS) are missing, the installer will try to request an IP address via DHCP. Nov 20 01:04:20 If DHCP is used but no address can be found via DHCP, the default IP address which Linksys uses will be used: 192.168.1.77 Nov 20 01:05:16 ah Nov 20 01:07:39 I'm seeing if wireshark will tell me anything Nov 20 01:07:49 broadcast? Nov 20 01:08:12 I expect to see the DHCP requests Nov 20 01:08:18 aye Nov 20 01:08:52 there are teh ARP Nov 20 01:09:12 seemingly alive Nov 20 01:11:37 I just see the arp requests Nov 20 01:11:41 no DHCP Nov 20 01:11:53 must be static? :/ Nov 20 01:12:10 ah ha Nov 20 01:12:19 I think I found it Nov 20 01:12:37 nope Nov 20 01:12:49 was an ip on my wireless network Nov 20 01:12:55 lol Nov 20 01:13:39 brb I think I have it the ip address that my current gateway is Nov 20 01:13:51 got to disconnect from wireless Nov 20 01:25:22 back Nov 20 01:25:33 sigh, can't get it Nov 20 01:26:35 I've gotta head out... There might be bits and pieces on the wiki about that... Nov 20 01:26:40 kk Nov 20 01:26:44 thanks for your help Nov 20 01:26:48 np Nov 20 01:28:03 is there anyone else in the channel who is familiar with the debian installation Nov 20 01:28:05 ? Nov 20 01:29:24 flash the Linksys firmware, then use the linksys reset procedure to make the linksys firmware reset the network to defaults -- from there you can set it how you want it, then reflash the debian fw and it will honor the network settings -- at least to the extent that was documented (Reedy cut-n-pasted for you). Nov 20 01:29:49 hmmmmm good idea Nov 20 01:30:19 you wont find many people in here with better advice than mike ;) Nov 20 01:32:01 found the firmware on the linksys site Nov 20 02:59:02 Hey guys still having problem with a debian install Nov 20 02:59:18 I can't seem to get the system to come back up after the upslug step Nov 20 02:59:40 I'm looking for some ideas **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Nov 20 03:00:07 2009
