**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Dec 23 02:59:58 2010 Dec 23 20:48:56 hi, anyone around? Trying to figure a sensible place to store logs, cert root file etc for automated wget calls (ddns update calls) on a synology 107+ NAS - am currently using /root/, but I figure I might put it somewhere more... sensible or practical, but have no idea about recommended practices in this regard Dec 23 20:50:46 and this system got a million folders, no idea where to really start Dec 23 20:56:47 * mwester would create a share on /volume1 for such a purpose, with suitable security set -- makes it a lot easier to review the logs, etc, from a remote host. Dec 23 20:57:32 Otherwise /var/log is a good place for log files. Dec 23 20:58:38 If you are using optware, then perhaps you have a /opt dirctory -- good place for the certs to live. Dec 23 21:08:46 mwester: thanks, yup makes sense... actually I already run error- and accesslogs for apache in the /volume1/web/log/ folder, so I've added it there Dec 23 21:10:32 I do have an /opt ... would /opt/local/ be appropriate, or just make my own folder under /opt/ for the .pem? Dec 23 21:12:08 mainly I'd love for it to be 'safe' during firmware updates, otoh it propbably isn't really any way I do it unless its in /volume1/ - but what do I know heh Dec 23 21:15:04 opt/local would be fine, i think. Dec 23 21:15:54 usually you would duplicate the higher-level structures under /opt/local -- e.g. /opt/local/bin for program executables, /opt/local/etc for config files (and I'd put the .pem therein as well). Dec 23 21:16:20 Not sure what happens to /opt when you upgrade; I haven't checked into that frankly. :) Dec 23 21:19:18 #ยค% changing the router rules keeps disconnecting me - that'll teach me to do it right @ 1st try :P Dec 23 21:19:47 mwester: thanks, appreciate the hints (if it didn't post last time) :) **** BEGIN LOGGING AT Fri Dec 24 01:26:45 2010 **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Dec 24 02:59:58 2010
