Aug 17 16:44:30 unslung Aug 17 16:45:02 and im setting permissions through the web interface, btw :) Aug 17 16:47:08 "One limitation of doing so is that you will not be able to assign any security settings (users/groups) to the drive like you could with the ext3 extension. Also, keep an eye out for this gotcha in Uslung 6.8 - UnslungLanguageSupport. " Aug 17 16:47:15 aaah, well thats why i guess Aug 17 16:47:35 im starting to think this Linksys Unslung rout is a POS, tbh Aug 17 16:47:44 might aswel install debian Aug 17 16:52:54 ah, and no NTFS3G package...just wonderful Aug 17 16:56:28 pear: Why did you select Unslung? Aug 17 16:58:02 mwester, after a few days with Unslung, im asking myself the same question now. i thought it woul be good as im not great with Linux. but i now see its even too limiting for me. :I Aug 17 16:58:26 As noted in the wiki, Unslung is intended for those who wish to ***extend*** Linksys firmware; it does not fix any of the limitations of the Linksys-proprietary code. It's also, by definition, limited to the 2.4 kernel (which precludes alternate NTFS implementations on such a device. :( Aug 17 16:59:48 SlugOS is an excellent alternate; Debian is good too but Debian is not easily recoverable (so just be aware that if something goes awry with Debian, then answer is often "start over"). On the other hand, Debian is truely Debian -- so any Debian Linux reference manuals/guides/how-tos should generally apply. Aug 17 16:59:48 mwster, i see that now :) do you think installing Debian will give me more freedom/better performance with my NTFS drive? Aug 17 17:00:03 You will be limited with your NTFS drive no matter what you do. Aug 17 17:00:06 It's NTFS. Aug 17 17:00:45 yes, from what i have read SlugOS might be a good chooice. Aug 17 17:01:11 Perhaps you might try both for a day or so, and see which you prefer. Aug 17 17:01:37 mwester, ok, for example...will the NTFS driver in SlugOS crash the same as with Unslung do you know? and also, will i be able to set share permissions? Aug 17 17:02:51 The preferred NTFS driver for SlugOS is ntfs-3g -- it works very well. Permissions will always be a problem; you'll have to map that with Samba, or live with mapping a single user id to the Windows Administrator id (or such) on NTFS; the security models are very different between the two. Aug 17 17:03:42 At the very least, with SlugOS or Debian you will have more control over the limitations; with the Linksys firmware it has decided what to map for you already. At least you'll have that advantage. Aug 17 17:04:01 Google ntfs-3g and see what you can dig up on permissions and mapping... Aug 17 17:04:14 oops gotta run. Aug 17 17:04:15 bbl Aug 17 17:04:33 mwester, ok, i see. yep Windows security is very different from Linux. but at least it will be possible on SlugOS i guess Aug 17 17:04:41 thanks for the tip mwester **** ENDING LOGGING AT Mon Aug 18 02:59:57 2008
