The reason is that (on a PDA) we *do* want each and every block device on the planet (except a few) to auto-mount. Non-PDA systems are of course a different kind of beast where you probably don't want any auto-mounting at all. Adjusting the default blacklist to ignore floppies and nbd should do the trick nicely. Jun 09 21:44:06 a whitelist could be easily controlled by machine Jun 09 21:44:33 The concept really only works for removable media anyway Jun 09 21:44:38 we have per-machine blacklists currently. Jun 09 21:45:49 but the idea of a blacklist is only sane when the number of devices to be blacklisted is smaller then the number of devices to whitelist Jun 09 21:45:59 it works fine on PDAs but breaks on any general purpose machine Jun 09 21:46:08 exactly =) Jun 09 21:46:09 I'm just saying is all Jun 09 21:46:19 Again - OE isn't just for PDAs Jun 09 21:46:37 good nite :) Jun 09 21:46:37 cool Jun 09 21:46:42 I was thinking about that CosmicPenguin Jun 09 21:46:46 you will sort it out Jun 09 21:46:52 for that old 486-100 I have with 8 meg ram Jun 09 21:47:03 Well - at least think about it Jun 09 21:47:20 I can fix it for myself by hacking local.rules, but think of the next poor soul who comes in here trying to build for a Via or something Jun 09 21:47:23 it's just for an embedded project I might just use freedos Jun 09 21:47:41 I might bolt it to my car window Jun 09 21:48:06 so I can display insulting graphic messages at drivers that piss me off Jun 09 21:48:10 it's only a mb + lcd now Jun 09 21:48:47 bbiab Jun 09 21:51:16 CosmicPenguin: I get your point, really. Jun 10 00:05:15 What level of programming is required for embedded programming? Jun 10 00:05:19 bioeng you are fine for programming slave, dont try to break put *g* Jun 10 00:05:27 out Jun 10 00:05:37 bioeng : advanced conception :( Jun 10 00:05:50 embedded programming is just programming, while ensuring your code is portable and keeping in mind the resource constraints of the system. Jun 10 00:06:19 I've been learning more about it lately Jun 10 00:07:01 especially since I'm entering my final year as an EE student Jun 10 00:07:44 My technical areas in EE are power and computer engineering Jun 10 00:08:22 My old friend from college is an embedded software engineer Jun 10 00:08:51 I'd be interested in getting into it too Jun 10 00:09:45 kergoth do you know if it possible to run kerneldebugger on serial line? Jun 10 00:10:14 woglinde_: pretty sure you can, but its been a long time since i messed with it.. i'm more of a printk() debugger :) Jun 10 00:10:47 I think they have a course required for computer engineers called systems programming in the CS department Jun 10 00:11:32 but what do you mean by programming slave? Jun 10 00:11:37 bioeng : embedded programming is just programming. if u want to control computer(chip, device... etc), it means system programming. Jun 10 00:12:12 It doesn't really require much beyond what's covered in an intro to C++ book? Jun 10 00:12:52 it completely depends on what you want to be doing. Jun 10 00:17:32 kernel/drivers work, likely involves takling to the hardware, writing teh drivers so linux or whatever operating system can access the hardware. that may be more your cup of tea if you're an EE Jun 10 00:18:06 That's what I was aiming for Jun 10 00:18:13 or even lower level than that, coding firmware for microprocessors Jun 10 00:18:15 kernel/drivers, hardware stuff Jun 10 00:18:18 that too Jun 10 00:18:24 I'm really good with hardware Jun 10 00:18:32 I just need to get better in software Jun 10 00:18:35 get really good with C if you arent already :) Jun 10 00:19:29 Where can I find the source for OpenEmbedded?
