I *think* I want to clone the upstream repo to a server. The server should likely have pristine branches tracking the remote stable and dev. In addition the server repo should contain our branch, that we make changes to and give controlled updates from the pristine stable-branch. Does this sound like a good plan? Oct 24 13:40:54 sounds workable Oct 24 13:42:46 I am having trouble with cross-compiling python 2.6.1 for gumstix. I'm new to git, so I'm really not sure.. Oct 24 13:45:36 Same thing, just uses two repos on the server instead of two branches in a single repo. his suggestion is probably safer. Oct 24 13:46:26 (git is rather flexible, almost too flexible in some cases) Oct 24 13:46:58 use whichever approach you prefer. Oct 24 13:47:28 You might consider some triggers to prevent inadvertent commits to the stable or dev branches from upstream, however. Oct 24 13:48:49 mwester: from upstream and down to my server? Oct 24 13:49:01 I am having trouble with cross-compiling python 2.6.1 for gumstix. After I do "bitbake python", the build stops at the do_package() with the following error - http://pastebin.com/d43148647 Oct 24 13:49:11 No, from internal to your server Oct 24 13:49:46 Is there a problem with the bitbake recipe? Oct 24 13:56:33 mwester: why do you figure his approach is safer? what started confusing me there was the steps taken on the local machines, adding of the mirror repo as a remote. I thought they only had to think about the server repo. Oct 24 13:59:04 Multiple repos would tend to reduce the possibility of contamination of the branch coming from upstream. Oct 24 13:59:46 And essentially, the local developer could be working with exactly the same methodology as other OE users Oct 24 14:00:18 except that when they push "up" they push to your local repo on your server, instead of to the OE server. Oct 24 14:01:23 (On the other hand, if you simply use a local branch, and the developers understand that they should use their branch instead of "stable" or "dev", then there's little benefit that I see) Oct 24 14:02:15 I think the reason the mirror repo is added is to that the local devs have visibility to what is being commited waaaayy upstream at the master OE repo level. Oct 24 14:02:27 But you can do that by using branches, too. Oct 24 14:04:03 mwester: ok. thanks for the info :) Oct 24 14:15:29 Hi all, I'm looking at OE to make firmware for my Neuros OSD. I've already built a kernel (not booting yet, but much to be done yet) but now I'm wondering how best to build on it Oct 24 14:16:23 There are some recipes that I'll use, but others that I want to modify for the OSD. What is the best way to customising recipes for one device? Oct 24 14:28:14 Has anyone tried the python bitbake recipe? It gives an error on do_package(). Here is the output - http://pastebin.com/d43148647 Oct 24 18:22:24 hemrampal: is it on angstrom ? Oct 24 18:23:55 yes Oct 24 18:25:41 khem: have you tried compiling python 2.6 for arm? Oct 24 18:36:33 hemrampal: dont inhrtit insane.bbclass Oct 24 18:36:53 but in general its good if it it enabled Oct 24 18:38:50 i am newbie to open-embedded.. Oct 24 18:39:04 what does disabling qa actually do? Oct 24 18:41:57 qa == Quality Assurance Oct 24 18:42:23 Disabling the QA checks results in certain Bad Things being ignored. Oct 24 18:43:23 How "Bad" they are depends on your needs and on your opinion, to some degree, but in general when the QA check fails, its usually a legitimate problem for a distro. Oct 24 18:44:23 The presence of a .debug directory in a package specifically means that you will have extra space consumed by the package, but the extra data won't prevent it from working correctly. But it might run your device out of flash space, which is a legitimate problem. Oct 24 18:45:15 mewster: how excalty do I tell bitbake to overlook a QA check? Oct 24 18:45:16 But at a higher level, if a .debug directory crept into a non-debug pacakge, it may be a sign that something is seriously wrong with the packaging, and the .debug is just the first of the problems with the packages. Oct 24 18:45:22 *exactly Oct 24 18:46:23 You'll have to sort out how to do that; google. I don't disable QA because it usually points out legitimate things I broke. :) Oct 24 18:47:57 I suggest you start with what khem said -- search your various conf files for an "inherit" statement that is pulling in the qa check class. Oct 24 18:48:03 mewster: I checked the bitbake recipe for python 2.6.1.. At one line it says "# catch debug extensions (isn't that already in python-core-dbg?)" Oct 24 18:48:31 does it have something to do with the error I am getting? Oct 24 18:49:49 No idea; I haven't ever looked at that recipe. The OE folks that handle python are usually on during the week.
