Jul 16 15:49:38 <compenguy> it looks like a layer 2 problem, because tcpdump doesn't see any more IP traffic, just "ARP, Request who-has _gateway tell <host>, length 28", to which there's no reply, and the ARP table shows (incomplete) for the gateway's hardware address once the network stops working
