**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Sun Nov 11 02:59:57 2012 Nov 11 16:40:17 Hello Nov 11 16:41:37 I'm investigating available phones for usage by /end user/ with some interest in device debug and development. My primary aim is to use the device as my regular phone, but eventually I'd like to tweak into it. Nov 11 16:42:42 reading the wiki I'm still not sure if the available models fit this. For instance, GTA04 looks pretty interesting as well as promising, but it's somewhat expensive for me (unfortunately) and I'm not sure how mature the software could be Nov 11 16:42:52 I'm looking for some advice Nov 11 16:43:22 also, if this is not the right channel please, let me know Nov 11 16:56:44 Kebianizao: gta02 is everyday useable if you do not mind the old hardware. Nov 11 16:57:19 interesting Nov 11 16:57:34 is that freerunner? Nov 11 16:58:33 Kebianizao: yes Nov 11 16:58:47 regarding technical specs I have 2 concerns: how long could the battery last? and does that provide data connection (GPRS/UMTS)? Nov 11 16:58:57 Kebianizao: It appears that i'm using gta02 for three years straight already. Nov 11 16:59:40 oh, I meant how long could you use the phone w/o needing to recharge the battery Nov 11 16:59:52 Kebianizao: gta02 can reach 140hours is suspend-to-ram with #1024 (deep sleep) hardware fix applied (that's with the ability to wake up to receive the call or get an incoming message). Nov 11 17:00:20 Kebianizao: i understand you, started to writing the previous message as an unrelated comment, not as the answer to your question. Nov 11 17:00:30 Kebianizao: only GPRS, not even EDGE :( Nov 11 17:00:34 ahok, sorry :) Nov 11 17:01:49 PaulFertser: what about regular usage, for instance several calls per day and some other data sessions per day. Would you say you can afford 2 days per charge cycle? Nov 11 17:02:23 As for gta04, it's currently much more power-hungry (but using the same battery) and also i'm not sure about the voice quality you can get with it (e.g. if you will be able to suppress "echo for the other side" or not). Nov 11 17:02:28 as far as I know, most common smartphones nowadays can hardly stand one day w/o recharging Nov 11 17:04:08 Kebianizao: i doubt that's really the case. I think the thing is that with common smartphones it's just too tempting to use it more, hence they spend the energy fast. Also, any misbehaving daemon will make it last much less because they mostly use "zero-clock" and not real suspend to ram, so if any software is causing unnecessary wakeups and you do not notice it with powertop or something, then you'll get bad battery life. Nov 11 17:05:04 Kebianizao: so yes, i think you can expect 2 days for gta02 if you do not use it extensively. Unfortunately, i've forgotten all the important numbers about current consumption while running... Nov 11 17:05:26 no problem on that. your help is already appreciated Nov 11 17:06:13 what would you say is the sofware activity on GTA02, is anything getting improved or most the effort is put on GTA04? Nov 11 17:06:19 I guess it was about 200mA so given a 1200mAh battery you can expect about 6 hours running time (with GSM in idle mode, when active, it consumes much more of course, also depends on cell network conditions). Nov 11 17:07:53 Kebianizao: well, i guess more activity is going into gta04 currently and gta02 in kind of maintenance mode but apart from the lower layer (which is somewhat satisfactory for gta02 already) everything else is shared, so that's not much of a problem. Nov 11 17:08:43 I think I "drained" you enough, now it's my turn I'll try to read a little more about it Nov 11 17:08:47 thanks PaulFertser Nov 11 17:09:07 Kebianizao: you want a hardware buzz-fixed version though if you want to actually use it as a phone (or if you have at least some smd soldering experience, you can do it yourself). Nov 11 17:10:00 Kebianizao: also, you can get a compatible nokia battery for like 3$ (shipping included) and carry around in your special pocket or something if needed. Nov 11 17:10:23 nice too Nov 11 17:11:56 Kebianizao: you can buy a used FR for cheap, buy a nokia battery and then someday you'll probably buy gta04 motherboard and replace the one in your freerunner. Nov 11 17:13:09 I'm looking at http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Distributors cheapest would come from slovakia, but link is dead, next is pulster, ~300€ :/ Nov 11 17:13:58 do you think I could get it cheaper than that? Nov 11 17:15:28 Kebianizao: i think that's quite possible, yes, if you buy a used one. Nov 11 17:17:53 mmm, I can't figure out where I could get a used one... Nov 11 17:19:47 ebay Nov 11 17:20:05 Or you can send an inquiry to the community mailing list. Nov 11 17:20:28 ok, I'll look there **** ENDING LOGGING AT Mon Nov 12 02:59:58 2012
