**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Jul 22 02:59:56 2010 Jul 22 06:12:07 why no candidate found when trying to install iscsitarget-modules on sheevaplug with pre-installed debian? Jul 22 06:50:04 If I do aptitude install kernel-package, will that allow module-assistant to do it's thing without complaining about missing kernel-headers or will it brick my plug because I messed with the kernel? Jul 22 06:52:29 NginUS: it wont brick Jul 22 06:53:05 but there is no matching kernel-headers preinstalled, module-assistant wont work Jul 22 06:53:54 suihkulokki : Is kernel-package indeed what provides these kernel-headers the module-assistant needs? Jul 22 09:19:28 What would happen if i did aptitude install linux-image-2.6.32-5-kirkwood? Would I have to learn how u-boot worked to unbrick my sheeva or would stuff like iotop & iSCSI magincally start workiing? Jul 22 09:27:02 NginUS: debian would stick the kernel on your filesystem, but you need to flash it onto the nand where uboot would be expecting it Jul 22 09:29:03 solarkennedy : Would that be far enough for it to go (to the filesystem & not to the NAND) in order for module-assistant to be able to not complain about missing kernel-headers when I try to enable iSCSI? Jul 22 09:29:34 probably, but is that kernel the same as what you are using now? Jul 22 09:29:54 Probably not. uname -a says this: Jul 22 09:30:18 Linux debie1 2.6.32.7 #5 PREEMPT Wed Feb 10 21:09:39 GMT 2010 armv5tel GNU/Linux Jul 22 09:30:34 well you could try it :) Jul 22 09:30:51 A kernel module might be built, maybe not one you can use Jul 22 09:32:15 What a PITA. I'm hesitant to do anything to this thing because they're so prone to bricking. I had to send one back to the UK to be reflashed & now I have to wait 3 weeks for it to return. If I kill this one, too- I'm really in deep doo doo Jul 22 09:32:55 I think I might just persue anothe route- this is killing me Jul 22 09:51:21 NginUS: this is why they sell the JTAG board Jul 22 09:59:44 NginUS: apt-get will not be able to brick anything Jul 22 10:00:20 it might cause debian to stop booting, but I wouldn't call it a brick Jul 22 13:23:47 If u-boot can no longer find both the SD card's pre-installed OS, or the internally installed OS, the device becomes useless to me, so I call that a brick. Apparently not technically a brick, since someone else with greater knowledge can simply tell u-boot where to look. That's beyond me, so I send it back. Jul 22 15:46:42 NginUS: send what back? Jul 22 15:48:54 NginUS: No it is not a brick. Jul 22 15:49:11 My first SheevaPlug, forum post: http://www.newit.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,504.0.html Jul 22 15:49:19 NginUS: All the information you need is pblished Jul 22 15:49:58 Ngi Jul 22 15:50:02 Absolute nightmare trying to decipher docs, never again. Jul 22 15:50:20 NginUS: Why are not looking in the correct forum? Jul 22 15:50:37 NginUS: The documenation is very easy to read. Jul 22 15:51:39 NginUS: http://plugcomputer.org/plugforum/index.php?action=forum Jul 22 15:51:58 NginUS: http://plugcomputer.org/plugwiki/index.php?title=Main_Page Jul 22 15:52:27 That's the forum of where I bought mine from. Jul 22 15:55:29 When I bought mine, I ordered these SD cards with preinstalled Debian Squeeze, & another with preinstalled Ubuntu 8.04- this in addition to the preinstalled internal Ubuntu on the NAND. I thought with that I'd be safe, then uboot stopped booting anything & I was over my head in an instant. Jul 22 16:49:01 NginUS: So read the documentation Jul 22 16:54:35 I wasted so much time on bad docs already, it's the last thing I want to toil over. I'll give these you mention a look & hope they'll work for the plug I have from NewIT. Official Debian docs don't seem to match for plugs, eg. module-assistant not knowing how to deal with u-boot. Much larger learning curve than expected. So far w/ the time, it'd have been cheaper to buy a NAS-enabled Drobo from the start. Jul 22 18:47:56 When I consider how much time I had having fun tinkering with my plugs, I think I've saved money compared to how much conventional entertainment would have cost :) Jul 22 19:14:41 :-) Jul 22 19:50:50 :] **** ENDING LOGGING AT Fri Jul 23 02:59:56 2010
