**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Fri Feb 18 02:59:57 2011 Feb 18 03:34:29 What is the best plug computer? Feb 18 04:02:38 MarixZ2: atm i'd say either the guruplug standard if you want cheap and don't need all the extras, or dreamplug if you're willing to pay a little extra for a lot of extra hardwre Feb 18 05:24:23 How is the tenidoplug? Feb 18 05:25:05 tonidoplug+ Feb 18 05:27:19 MarixZ2: it's just a rebranded sheevaplug Feb 18 05:27:36 which is what the sheevaplug was intended for, for a company to mass-buy them and rebrand with their software Feb 18 06:20:54 Is it good? The software looks pretty good. I would like it for a nas and torrent box. Feb 18 06:23:31 the software on all of them is customizable Feb 18 06:26:29 I seen openplug, but I want something that works out of the box for what I want. I am not that good of a linux guy. I am on linux right now on a Z2, but I want my nas to work all the time. Feb 18 06:36:42 I don't think any of them will work out of the box for torrents, given the debatable legal status of such software Feb 18 06:37:19 but I think pretty much all of them do NAS stuff by default Feb 18 06:39:19 The tonidoplug has a torrent program built in. Torrent programs are completly legal. Just like guns and knives are legal. Feb 18 06:40:09 I'm not saying whether they are or not, just that it's far from something that everybody agrees about, so it's not going to be there out of the box Feb 18 06:41:01 Well, look at tonido.com its on there. Feb 18 06:41:26 then get that one? Feb 18 06:43:46 Im thinking of getting it. Do you know how goog the western digital external hdd are? Feb 18 06:44:51 goog=good. Feb 18 06:45:44 if you're connecting the drive over usb2 that'll probably be the bottleneck for the most part Feb 18 06:45:58 I've got a seagate drive in an esata enclosure Feb 18 06:46:28 most of the plugs don't do esata though so usb2 is the only option Feb 18 06:48:10 it's usually the case that "external drives" (i.e. drives that you buy already inside an enclosure) are lower-grade than average, and it's better to buy the drive and enclosure separately Feb 18 06:48:44 Whats a good enclosure to get? Feb 18 06:50:28 I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TQ2PSO/ref=oss_product Feb 18 06:51:15 esata and usb2 Feb 18 06:54:37 Never heard of Vantec or NexStar Feb 18 06:57:33 vantec makes a lot of power supplies, cases and other enclosures, and cooling stuff Feb 18 07:00:27 cool. what drive do you have? Feb 18 07:00:43 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00066IJPQ/ref=oss_product Feb 18 07:07:30 The 2tb is 10 more, but only 5900 rpm. Feb 18 07:07:55 up to you :) Feb 18 07:09:33 Is it that big of difference between 5900 and 7200? Feb 18 07:11:59 it affects seek time and sustained bandwidth, but perhaps it won't be much of a difference attaching it to a plug computer Feb 18 07:14:58 ok. Feb 18 07:15:52 Vantec enclosures are decent Feb 18 07:22:02 Just decent? Feb 18 08:01:18 what does "Just decent?" mean? Feb 18 08:01:31 decent is decent as opposed to bad Feb 18 08:01:54 he's gone anyway Feb 18 08:02:03 I know Feb 18 08:04:35 mdm2k: I had a strange incident with a Vantec enclosure. I had one open on the floor as I was swapping a drive between it and a tower. I accidentally stepped on the Vantec circuit board and bent the connectors. I actually managed to get the connectors bent back and lookinging like new with no cracks in the circuit board or in the connectors. Feb 18 08:04:56 Lessor enclosures would not have survived that abuse Feb 18 08:05:03 * tinker-f595 sleep Feb 18 08:06:49 tinker-f595: nice! nevertheless I think I'm going to try and avoid stepping on mine as a precaution **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sat Feb 19 02:59:57 2011
