Jun 12 21:25:11 this keyring really annoys me Jun 12 21:25:28 headless machines should not require a login to bring up network Jun 12 21:25:28 Which keyring? Jun 12 21:26:10 They don't, but to not do so you need to configure the network, rather than relying on Network Manager Jun 12 21:26:18 unlock login keyring Jun 12 21:26:31 the login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer Jun 12 21:27:10 and to configure the network not relying on network manager, guessing there is not a nice gui for that Jun 12 21:27:37 There's gnome-network-properties, but it doesn't get as much care, no. Jun 12 21:28:23 Right. The package is called gnome-network-admin. Jun 12 21:31:07 installing that, see where it takes me :D Jun 12 21:35:57 If it doesn't quite do what you want, editing /etc/network/interfaces is likely to do the right thing. Jun 12 21:36:26 yeah Jun 12 21:46:34 sigh. i think login keyring has it wrong Jun 12 21:46:52 if the user is auto logged in, should inherit its privs, and keyring acess Jun 12 21:47:07 No, it intentionally doesn't. Jun 12 21:47:09 as asking for a pw after defeating a login pw request makes no sense Jun 12 21:47:21 The idea being that autologin shouldn't automatically unencrypt your secrets. Jun 12 21:47:33 so intensionally allows them to login un challenged, but block them for touch ing teh net? Jun 12 21:47:54 No. Network access works *unless* there is a password. Jun 12 21:48:01 is it possible to uninstall this keyring, so all apps can go back to the pre-keyring behavior? Jun 12 21:48:11 pre-keyring is ~ 2007 Jun 12 21:48:19 i am ok with that Jun 12 21:48:40 Sure, but Ubuntu wasn't compiling ARM back then. Jun 12 21:48:45 indeed Jun 12 21:48:51 I suppose you could take the source of an old release, port to ARM, etc. ... Jun 12 21:49:22 what a PITA if you want to have a wireless networked system with the option to plug in a head Jun 12 21:50:05 i think there is a usability issue here that has not been addressed, or i am the only crazy person who wants their computer to connect to wifi before they login Jun 12 21:50:48 No, lots of folks want that: the common use case is $HOME-on-nfs Jun 12 21:50:52 that cant be. i MUST have configured something wrong this install, as i THOUGHT it was auto logging in and connecting to teh network at one time Jun 12 21:51:20 shouldnt the wifi WPA2 setup be somewhat easier to find/enable then? Jun 12 21:52:00 Yeah, well. Talk to the GNOME folk who decided this was the right model. Jun 12 21:54:08 But keep in mind the counter-argument: just because someone happens to pick up your laptop, you don't want them to have all your passwords. Jun 12 21:55:59 or the argument that wifi password does not belong on the keyring Jun 12 21:56:28 i am suddenly wishing for a debian dist Jun 12 21:58:33 perhaps this is the answer i seek Jun 12 21:58:33 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=571188 Jun 12 21:59:15 MrCurious: it's possible to have a system-wide setting in NetworkManager. It's ini-format files in /etc/NetworkManager/. Not sure if that still works with NetworkManager 0.9 but it definitely worked with 0.8 (used for a few customers who needed network for login) Jun 12 22:01:53 Debian's Network Manager behaves the same. Jun 12 22:02:13 stgraber, Does that correspond with "make available to all users"? Jun 12 22:02:52 persia: I think so. IIRC that feature would convert your network definition from gconf+gnome-keyring into the .conf file in /etc/NetworkManager Jun 12 22:03:33 That feature is still present in 0.9, although I'm not sure of the mechanism. **** ENDING LOGGING AT Mon Jun 13 02:59:57 2011
