**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Fri May 03 02:59:58 2013 May 03 19:17:18 hello! not sure if this is the right place to ask, but maybe someone can help: i've got a palm pre and i would like to use it without a battery. it can be turned on, but it just displays the battery symbol with a question mark. does anyone know of an easy way to start the device without a battery? what causes that battery image to be displayed? is it the bootloader or the kernel? May 03 19:17:53 you cannot start it without a battery. May 03 19:18:32 the thing that causes the [?] symbol to be displayed is the extra communication line between the battery and the charging circuit, iirc. May 03 19:18:40 it is the maxim fuelgauge-IC, afaik. May 03 19:19:33 wej, if you start the phone and remove the battery, after about 5-10s, it will shut down. May 03 19:20:16 wej, why do you need to run it without a battery? May 03 19:20:59 yeah, i know there is that DS2784 controller inside the battery, but before i start to build a fake fuelgauge to trick the pre into thinking there is a battery attached, i wanted to ask if someone knows what exactly communicates with the fule gauge. is it software or is the initial check really done in hardware (can't imagine that's really the case)? May 03 19:21:36 its all handled by the circuit, iirc May 03 19:21:40 but im no expert May 03 19:23:00 if you create a dummy battery, it should just have to send CHGTF flag, capacity, and possibly a few others May 03 19:23:03 i really don't know May 03 19:23:26 yeah, that's what i was thinking about, emulating the fulegauge thingy with a microcontroller May 03 19:24:01 wej, somline may be able to help you with your endevor May 03 19:24:09 he's the one who wrote Dr. Battery May 03 19:24:14 afaik, anyway May 03 19:24:17 but i was hoping that maybe i could avoid doing that ;) May 03 19:24:20 a i see, May 03 19:24:26 thanks for your help May 03 19:28:17 he may be in #webos-internals May 03 19:28:30 or atleast from time to time **** ENDING LOGGING AT Sat May 04 02:59:58 2013
